Author Profile: Tom Ford

Tom Ford. Contributing Editor of Top Gear Magazine and officially the most random person ever to hold a driving licence. Has variously been the Roadtest Editor of CAR Magazine, Deputy Editor of Top Gear and a TV presenter of dubious but amusing quality. Specialises in the usual Top Gear idiocy of taking supremely unsuitable cars to spectacularly stupid places, preferably via somewhere dangerous. Also takes pride in being somewhat unprepared for every adventure. Interests include anything with an engine, with a strange passion for large V8s and open headers, or elegant but pointless engineering. Though his own brand of modifying ranges from the ridiculous to downright dangerous. Quite possibly seen underneath a car near you, though by accident or by design, it is never quite clear...

Lambo Murciélago SV

Posted by Tom Ford at 12:06 pm on Tuesday August 25, 2009

The SV is not a subtle car. As soon as it appears, childish you starts jabbering and capering about in your head: ‘Look! It’s got a massive wing! And look, the exhaust is a lozenge-shaped cave… And it’s so BIG, and WIDE and NOISY and orange’. You are reduced to a state of pure gawp.

The problem with hanging out with maniacs is that they can make you look like you lack spontaneity. OK, so they might be spitting nonsense, smoking crack and trying to rip the faces off passers-by, but at least they aren’t dull.

SuperBentley

Posted by Tom Ford at 3:58 pm on Tuesday May 26, 2009

This looks most excellent. A 621bhp Conti that weighs quite a lot less than the slightly lardy straight version – 110kg lighter. No back seats, harder suspension – it’s like the good old days.

Solar-powered motorbike

Posted by Tom Ford at 11:14 am on Friday May 22, 2009

Hopefully this little item is true. Take one inventor and create solar-powered bike. It’ll apparently manage 50 miles on a full charge and top 90mph. Ok, so it ain’t pretty and he lives in Arizona (lots of sunshine – it might not be so good in Dulwich), but it appears to be working. Would you [...]

911 GT3 vs Viper GT3 at ‘Ring

Posted by Tom Ford at 8:17 am on Thursday May 21, 2009

Some bloomin’ brilliant dicing here between two heavy hitters – but is that Porsche actually holding up our American friend, but just a little too fast to pass easily?

Brabus E-Coupe

So the car has been out roughly 35 seconds and already Brabus have a pretty stacked upgrade package for the car. You can have full (albeit subtle) body mods, any interior you want as well as the usual engine upgrades. Ok, so they know about the engines and how to ramp them up – but [...]

Nascar bites back

Posted by Tom Ford at 9:44 am on Wednesday May 20, 2009

Michael McDowell’s big off from last year. You may have seen this footage before – but it really is amazing that he walks away from this one: 180-ish mph into a concrete wall, followed by several massive bumps on the head. Nascar – they might not know how to turn in both directions, but they’re [...]

Touge Battles are still rocking…

I’ve never seen an MX-5 do THAT before. Well, I have, but not quite that easily. Or with that much smoke.
