Aston Martin V12 Vantage

Posted by Paul Horrell at 11:53 am on Thursday August 13, 2009

aston_cityTop Gear likes a bit of controversy, and it’s the Aston that provided it. Us mortals loved the V12 Vantage, lining up to declare it the best Aston ever. But the Stig declared us mistaken.

The discord is about the Aston’s handling. Last year on the Isle of Man we had a DBS and we hated it. This year on the road the V12 Vantage is deliciously different: it’s intimate and analogue when the DBS was distant and digital. You can feel the V12 Vantage’s steering as it works its way into corners, giving a reassurance we treasure. The suspension is softer than the DBS’s too, which makes it more progressive and more forgiving on a bumpy road or in the wet. For the real world, in other words.

At the track things get uneasy. It goes from initial understeer to power-oversteer a bit messily. We plug in the Stig for further analysis. He signals that the front end is too soft, designed to understeer to keep ordinary drivers safe on the road. In fast corners it rolls too much, he says, and in slow ones doesn’t have the traction to prevent oversteer. Stig prefers the DBS, which he says is a perfectly set-up tautly sprung sports car.

Aston_trackWatch Stig’s lap in the Aston V12 Vantage

Of course, no one, whether man or white-suited überman, had any issues with the Vantage’s V12. One letter and two digits that tell you pretty much all you need to know, but if you want to know more try some more digits: 5.9 litres and 510bhp, and no turbos to soften the noise. A good old-fashioned manual ‘box, and none of Aston’s clunky paddles. Well actually, a not-that good old-fashioned gearbox – the shift is on the clunky side.

Everyone agrees the Vantage is a knee-tremblingly beautiful thing. Well, everyone except the Stig who doesn’t do beauty.

Odd. We expected that when Aston put its biggest engine in its smallest car it would build a track monster. Instead it’s a joyously useable road car that doesn’t like powerlapping much at all.

Don’t forget, we’ll be revealing details of one car every day from Top Gear magazine’s Big Performance Car Showdown – a blog with our verdict and video of one of Stig’s laps.

That wobbly bit when you’re turning in, and the dampers don’t seem to wake up until after the first inch or so, that’s awful: like some bolts weren’t tightened properly and the whole thing might fall apart. I felt it in quite a few cars (not just the budget models either), and I always wonder why the manufacturer left it in. It’s probably quite easy to set right, so why don’t they?

Lap time looked to be around the 1min28 mark if that video is in real time … seems way too slow though, doesn’t it?

In the end it doesn’t matter though because we have an Aston Martin V12 Vantage.

    Say it with me now:

    Aston Martin V12 Vantage.

The thing I like is the idea of Aston engineers sitting around the factory having a con-flab about how to make the V8 Vantage better without breaking the bank, then someone piping up ‘Hey I know, lets just stuff one of the V12s we’ve got laying around in it.’

That borders on a Top Gear How-Hard-Can-It-Be idea and it’s now a full production car!!

I love Astons. They’re mind-bogglingly beautiful, and yet you could use one every day. But if you park one outside Tesco, you’re gonna get noticed and will probably have a huge crowd of car fans engulfing your gorgeous Aston by the time you get back, which is a good thing, in a way.

The V8 was a soft and comfortable sports car with the usual looks that only Astons have. It was quiet when you wanted it to be but it could change its character with a bootful of throttle and glorious noise from the V8 engine. But it was practical, too. The boot was fairly big for a sports car – 300 litres, in fact – about the same size as an Alfa Brera’s boot, impressive. But there was one problem: the Jaguar XK.

The XK was also a comfortable sports car with a exquisite V8 engine and could also change its character with a bootful of throttle. But its boot was 30 litres bigger than the Aston’s and the XKR could manage 0-60mph in 4.6 seconds compared to the Aston’s 4.7 seconds. Yes, the Jag’s figures might be a tiny bit better than the Aston’s, but the price isn’t. The Jag XKR is £72,400 – £10,500 less than the Aston.

The V12 Vantage however is much more brutish than the Jag and V8 Vantage with its bit hairy-chested V12 form the DBS. It also has new manly air-vents and gills with make it look much more powerful but don’t upset it’s beauty, which is impeccable. According to TG Mag the 0-60 time for the V12 Vantage is 4.1 seconds. That makes it 0.2 seconds faster than the DBS and is only 1mph shy of its top speed.

However the V12 Vantage is still a bit soft and can’t keep up with the DBS around a track, but it’s much more practical than a DBS. But why pay £135,000 for a car which isn’t hugely different from it’s sister, the V8 Vantage? Why not save £48,000 and buy the V8? It’s still got an incredible engine note, drop-dead gorgeous looks and is still a proper Aston.

I’ll have to test drive the V12 Vantage to see what it drives and feels like, but that’s only if i can, unfortunately there’s something called a recession going on at the moment which messes up the economy and everyone’s wallet.

For some reason I have never been taken by the looks of any Aston. Most fall into the category of indifference, but this, with the monstrous bonet louvres is verging towards ugly. I can think of about 50 cars that I would rather have up to the price of a V12 vantage.

Why buy a Merc CL when you can have a DB9?

Aston Martin how I love thee! They are on TOP form right now and all their cars are more beautiful than any Porsche, Lamborghini or Ferrari. In fact Lambos seem to be getting worse and worse with every new model and facelift. The new 458 italia looks like a return to form for Ferrari though, very nice.

The time for the Aston Martin V12 Vantage watching the video is 1:27.0, check the times from when he accelerates (4 seconds in,) to when he brakes after the line, (1:31.0). According to Wikipedia, it was 1:26.8, the 2nd fastest Aston ever, fastest being 1:23.9 by the DBS V12.

@ amdbs, Like I said, if you watch the video then it’s around that. True, it’s not always right, but it’s pretty right. Watch the video and watch Stig’s feet and gear shifts. He clearly starts to go at 4 seconds, and brakes after the line, (which you see him on the final short stint after Gambon corner,) at 1:31.0, making the time around 1:27.0. Of course there’s no proof that’s real time or that it’s exactly 1:26.8, but if its real time, (and I believe it is, as it shows the whole lap and is comparatible to other cars of similar performance,) then 1:26.8 is very propable.

Believe what you like, I believe that is the time. :)

I have a challenge for Top Gear- they drive around, test and push to the limits many unique sports cars and supercars, but how good supercars can Clarckson, May and Hammond make with their knowledge, some money and time. Whether it is my favourite Vantage however, is another story. I think the Vantage from the early 90’s was and still is the best. Don’t really care about the modern stuff. The whole point of a car with a big engine is, in short: “Not to be messed with”. And nobody would dare mess with 2.5 tonnes of supercharged british beef.

Marco, Astons aren’t thoroughbred racing cars. They’re more long distance GT cruisers and executive coupes than racing cars like Ferraris.

Also, its Germany where most of the Aston’s parts are built. (engine, brakes etc..) In Britain all they do is bolt it all together so its the germans that have more right to be proud of Astons. (same story with other cars like Rollers and Minis).

    Marco

I dont buy (and love) cars because some totally different car wearing the same badge has a “racing pedegree” that would be like buying a crap painting because its sold by the same shop selling an original Van Gough.

I love astons cos they are beautiful, fast, comfortable and are respected by just about everyone you see on the road.

From experience let me tell you: Porshe are noisy and have a very hard ride which gets very tiring after a long drive(but handle wonderfully) ferrari are just hard work, noisy smaelly and very very cramped. Maserati are just badly built, bad to drive and dont look special enough for me.

If you only like a car because of its racing pedigree the buy a Honda Civic – Honda (as Brawn) are top of the F1 leaderboards at the moment are they not.??

as i said, i have owned and driven them all and the DB9 is the one to keep: the only one tat ever came near was my XKR.

When u have driven them all come back and argue i’m wrong, but u wont, cos you’ll be trying to work out how to hang on to the DB9!!!!!!

100% with you. Marco is clearly some know-nothing Italian, and/or obsessed with Italian cars. I’ve driven a number of Ferraris and they don’t compare to a DB9. You can drive around and be proud in an Aston. They’ll never be uncool, and you’ll never be hated for the wrong reason (aside from the fact that you own what is probably in most people’s dream garage)

its a beautiful car but i would rather take a dbs.you couldnt say the one-77 because if there was a race between the the one-77 and the vantage the one-77 would destroy it.

Yet another Aston with a hopeless gearbox – how do people spend big money on this rubbish. Even Hyundai and Kia can make cars with gearboxes that work properly.

I love the V12 vantage but i’d find it hard to choose between that or a Ferrari 458 Italia.

Marco, you really love Astons don’t you? admit it! Denial is the first step towards acceptance. Yes, you may say Italian products are better, but we all know in you heart you feel differently. Its OK, these days Aston-love is accepted in the wider community – don’t feel you have to love all things red, plastic and poorly made, just because its cool. C’mon, out yourself! You will be among friends, I’m sure!

Ps no-one would begin to say that Astons can match Ferrari’s F1 pedigree. but do Ferraris and Maserati regularly win Nurgurgring and Le Mans in recent years? You can’t dent the Aston love any more, come on over to the light side!

Astons are owned by Kuwaiti’s, and one of the Chairmen is German, one English.

so not owned by Germans. or english. or americans. but Kuwaiti’s.

Ferrari however is owned by the mob.

i expected the V12 to be smooth & quick, but what was that?
when pulling away from the startline it started wobbling and in the corners also. and i’ve seen better aston martin’s. DBS is a car from heaven!

@MARCO – are you stupid? have you done any research into your claims? Aston Martin currentlly compete in the following race series :

    • The FIA GT Championship with events worldwide
    • Le Mans Series (LMS) based in Europe
    • American Le Mans Series (ALMS)
    • FIA European GT3 Series
    • FIA GT4 European Cup
    • Belgian GT Championship (Belcar)
    • Australian GT
    • British GT Championship
    • Open GT
    • Aston Martin Asia Cup
    • Britcar/Aston Martin Vantage GT4 Challenge

    No racing pedigree hey?

Does anyone know what the music was which was played while Jeremy was driving the Astin Martin V12 and feeling sad as he felt that this type of car was a dying breed? It was the episode when they raced up the country in a Jag, Vincent and steam train I think.
