If you’re of a rural bent, you’ll have heard of cow-tipping – the sport where cruel country-dwellers tip a dozing bovine off its feet and into the grass for the simple reason that the lumbering beast finds it near-impossible to stand up again.
Well, exchange the world ‘cow’ for ‘ForTwo’, and the word ‘grass’ for ‘canal’ and you’ve hit upon the phenomenon of ‘Smart Smijten’, currently sweeping the Netherlands.
Yes, Amsterdam police have reported a worrying rise in the cases of Smart-tipping, as high-spirited Dutchmen tip ForTwos into local canals after a long night on the Oranjeboom.
Taking advantage of owners who park their ForTwos perpendicular to the water’s edgewater, the feckless Smijteners lift the front of the poor Smart and shove it backwards into the canal.
The police say they have known about this trend for a while, but have tried to keep quiet about it to prevent copycat crimes.
Which means, er, we shouldn’t have said anything.
Forget what you just read.
And don’t park your ForTwo next to water.

So they have finally graduated from tipping bicycles into canals to (very small) cars.
In a year or two I’m afraid the competition will drive them to take on normal cars.

I don’t really like smart cars either, but you don’t see me reveling in the pointless destruction of an expensive piece of equipment. I mean, if I find somebody’s television to be too small for my tastes, I’m not going to throw it out of the window. I’m not sure I’d be as draconian as al with his punishment, but I don’t think the perpetrators should get off lightly.
I heard about this earlier today and have to admit to having a giggle about it but obviously it’s an awful thing to happen to anyone. I wonder where you would stand with your insurance company? Would they just tell you, “Tough, we’re not paying, you should have bought a heavier car” or would they be a bit more sympathetic?

Maybe it will convince people not to buy smart cars. They’re small, cramped, ugly and pretty unsafe… knowing that your feet are about 2cm from the wall which you hit.

Nothing new there. We Dutch are proudly famous for dumping cars into canals. And bikes. And each other. And ourselves, when drunk enough. The first one I saw was a 2CV, which we call Eend (ie duck). ‘What else floats?’ ‘Well, not a duck, obviously.’
But look closer at this particular Smart: silver and pink? In Amsterdam, in this particular week of the year? That’s gaybashing, that is.
I like the G-Wiz idea, I’ll try for a Prius next time. Might be a bit heavy though.

The crazy Dutch and a new crazy trend there. It’s typical that they’re the first to invent such a crazy trend as the Dutch are crazy. If only they were G-Wiz’s, that would be so much better!
So if your a bored millionare who live by a canal here’s a tip: Buy as many G-Wiz’s as possible and tip them into the canal near your house and watch you laugh yourself to death!

Liam, the LaRo thing I don’t get. LaRo owners are usually fit, heavyset, armed and to be considered dangerous. You don’t mess with LaRo owners. Male Smart owners on the other hand, are usually in the limpwristed featherweight class. If you’re gonna get caught (very likely, considering the state you’re in at the time), make sure to be safe.

I love cars dont get me wrong here and I believe that ruining peoples cars no matter how cheap or crap they may be is wrong and disrespectful, but this just makes me laugh because quite simply I hate the Smart Car a lot! @25 Well, the Smart is not so much a car as it is a good joke. Drive it without preconceptions about what a car should be and you might get it. I did, once, and I had to smile. As daily transport it’ll do (singles and commuters only), as a car it’s hopeless of course.
Tip someone’s small tall car into a canal or river and get away with it? I think we have the makings os a Japanese game show here. Although that would probably be called Kei-tipping and have some rediculous complication like being blindfolded or naked or something.

b)…. leave it in your garage overnight!
no one should put them in the canal, people work hard for their money these days and to damaged some ones car like that the little sh1ts should be hung;
what if that was a old lady who wanted to drive home, or if she had an emergency and wanted to get some where quickly in her car, shame on you lot thinking its good and funny well its not, and the poeple who did it have been caught and arrested/prosecuted, as they well deserve to.
