Range Rover’s magic screen

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 12:02 pm on Monday July 20, 2009

You’ll have read in Paul Horrell’s review of the new Range Rover that it has a clever twinview sat nav screen, that shows the driver one thing and the passenger another. You no doubt wondered what it looks like in action:

Even seeing it with our own eyes will still haven’t a clue how it works – it’s no doubt some kind of magic –  but we don’t really care either.

Apparently Mercedes has a bit of a strop on over who invented/came out with the technology first, as it features in the next gen S-Class.

But we’re not bothered. We’re just impressed.

We think Horrell was right though, and that drivers will be craning their necks to see what the passenger’s watching.

Still, clever stuff.

I can think of a way in which it works, but even James may would probably be bored to tears if I was to recite it… ..aw hell, why not.

Right! First of all you can make a ridged panel using triangular ridges. On one side of the ridge is one set of LED pixels (Group A), the other a different set of pixels (Group B). So long as group A is on the same side of all the ridges it will display an image off to one side. Group B will do the same to the opposite side. Connect group A up as one monitor, and Group B up as a second monitor to the in car computer and bobs your uncle.

They use a similar kind of technology with up and coming 3D screens if I’m not mistaken, where the 3D effect only works if you’re viewing the screen from one of the correct angles.

Reminds me of the old cardboard cartoons you used to get in cereal packets, where you held it one way you got one image, and held it another way, got a different image. Though this looks a lot less crude. Interesting viewing for the middle rear passenger no doubt.

So why, Mr. Hibbard, did the TV show choose to show a ridiculous greenhouse-on-trailer clip rather than poking around the new Range Rover they had in the studio like they said they would in Transmission this week?

Surely it would be a good idea to show stuff like this off, perhaps to claw back some of the idea that Top Gear is actually a car programme of sorts rather than an all-out sketch show?

Wouldn’t it have been good to have May poking around saying “Wow, it has LCD dials and a dualview screen” and look and all the luxury! You could have fitted a whole roadtest into that segment about CO2.

What on earth is going on in Top Gear land?

oh also the technology wasn’t invented by JLR or Mercedes, it was outsourced to the people that make screens for both the companies.

Final rant: Am I going mad, or did the VAUXHAULL SIGNUM have more airtime a few years ago than the XJ and Range Rover combined?

Every time you fail to mention something about JLR, BMW and Mercedes get together to STAMP ON KITTENS, and it’s ALL YOUR FAULT.

Now that’s a great idea! You can see where to go and the passengers can stop bothering you that they’re bored and watch a movie. The new Range Rover does seem to be the best ever off-roader, and i can believe that too.

Wow! That’s better than I imagined. Mind you, for some reason I envisaged some kind of arrow-head design that displayed two screens in two directions. How silly of me.

I just love the Range Rover – I think the 5.0SC non-Sport is just the best do-everything car ever conceived.

Btw, I’m with Chappers. You guys just aren’t focusing on the cars anymore on the TV show. It’s not good. I thought all 3 presenters love the Rangey? Surely they did have a look? Surely this very feature is TV-worthy? Stop appealing to 9-year-olds. Please. I like kittens…

My persuading argument? I was forced to watch Fifth Gear the other day. Because I wanted to find out about the 370Z, Boxster 2.9 LSD and new Z4.

Mind you, their camerawork is horrid. They just zoom in and out on stuff really quickly, nothing compared to TG cinematography.

What a brilliant invention. Would have a good use in the home to (imagine how much better a two player racing game would be with a full screen each, or a shoot-em-up without the ability to cheat by looking at your competitor’s screen). I should sell the idea to Sony…

Anyway, yes to the above posts- why the heck wasn’t this featured in the show? I actually liked SIARPC this week (for more reasons that the fact the guest was fit) and the news too, as they actually featured cars (even the new XJ launch!), but crickey the show is losing its way. Enjoy it while it lasts TopGear, you’ll lose the ratings soon when the ‘entertainment’ audience move on, and the car guys will have gone already.

Jeremy, you always moan that everyone says its scripted, when the races aren’t at all, but things like the ridiculous greenhouse scene undo all your good work and credibility.

It would be like the Daily Mail writing an honest news story – no-one would believe them no matter how good it was, ‘cos they make up everything else they print.

Even the TG awards are a joke now, they used to be so well respected. Now its ‘best shirt’ ‘best chat up line’ etc etc. You’ve brought about your own lack of red I’m afraid, so much as I dislike the conspiracy theorists, they getting more and more on-the-money with TG.

..hmm ina a very uncool gadety-gadetry way I suppose this is well cool.. as for why it wasn;t featured..imagine making a 3 minute feature about it..because as we all know the rangey didn’t change much so a whole sequence on it would have been kinda very very dull… so it would have gone something like ahh btw the new rangerover has a new screen that enables blah blah blah.. ..and this is it…camera zooms in.. ahhh no…

as for 5th gear.. well they’ve def. stepped up their game and if the presenters wouldn’t be of the looser sort it could even be a great show.. their camera work has considerably improved, the topics are presented in an interesteing sometimes even an intrigueing manner.. the cars are the ones we didn’t really get to see on tg because of the tyre smoke and it goes on and on.. shame about the not quite so talented and very annoying, superficial, shallow, dumb and dull in a a most boring and in yoyur face way presenters… The only thing TG have on 5th gear right now is clarkson and may and the weight their egos carry…nothing else at all..

Adolescent fool, I wouldn’t go that far. Compared to TG, 5th Gear just feels cheap – the set, presenters and camera work do nothing to add to overall quality.

But you’re right, they have got better; Fifth Gear has always just been TopGear, only a few years ago (in terms of what the show is like). The problem is that TopGear was at it’s best a few years ago. And they do poke around new cars -DB9, Conti GT, Mazda Furai, DBR9, 308 RC-Z, why not the new Range Rover, a car they surely love?

mikeado.. I don’t believe 5th gear feels cheap or cheaper than top gear. especially not this new series.. the set is more honest, perhaps a bit more hype than what we’re used to from tg.. for better or worse more trendy I suppose..The show is more focused on individuals between 12 and 42..typically of the petrol head type and though the general atmosohere is soaked in mtv it still has a certain appeal. Every time i catch an episode.. I think, yes they’re a tg knock off and they try a tad too hard but at the same time..replace the presenters with people who have just a gram more charisma and tg could be in for a shock.. I really only watch tg because of JC and may..I like their perspective on life as different as they are and I’d watch any show if either of them were featured..Unlike the 5th gear crew, they’re interesting people. The car part of tg has long seized to get my blood flowing..they’ve been running around in circles since the toybota.. The features were all excellent though and I’d love to see more but as comedy tg fails, it also fails as a show about cars so in my opinion the only aspects of Tg I still find interesting are Clarkson and May.. Everything else is like watching ones favourite film..over and over and over again…

in my eyes that is the most useless piece of technology ever invented, what is the point?? who on earth thinks that is a gd idea? complete waste of money and time. . .and on such a fantastic car 2?i think range rover should go back 2 what they used 2 b, theyv changed so much recently.

Ive been in one of these and the rear middle view of the screen is a mix of both screens! – you can see sat nav and the tv at the same time! – you can sort of focus on one and the other without too much trouble, and the sound is primarily the TV programme with the sat nav interupting now and again

If they used ultrasound speakers aimed in two different directions, they could do the same with sound. Mind you, they probably do it already – it wouldn’t make much sense to implement this tech without it, having to try to hear your film over the GPS or (even more importantly) vice versa. Earphones wouldn’t make great solutions either.
