Caught on camera

If your car has ever returned from its service or MOT at the local garage will noticeably less loose change in the, er, loose change pocket-things, you’ll sympathise with this one:

A man from Lafayette, Indiana became so irritated with his local mechanics pilfering his quarters, dimes and so on that he hooked that small digital video camera in his Toyota Tundra truck.

Oh yes. Look at the technician happily mining coins from the storage bins and, even more impressively in the next one, rummaging through a pot of pills and then licking his fingers. It’s unpleasant viewing… but strangely addictive:

Another mechanic is alleged to have watched some, er, questionable material through a diagnostic laptop hooked up to the car, though the video detailing this has been removed from YouTube.

After the videos were shown to the owner of the garage, four employees were fired.

Have you had anything nicked from their car while it has been in the garage? No naming names, please, or we’ll get in trouble, and we’ll be forced to take this blog down.

Now that’s what i call ‘caught red-handed’! This is the problem with servicing and MOT’s, you never know what the mechanics are doing to your vehicle or even your possessions in the vehicle. Odviously you should wisely choose where you get your car serviced, or your pocket could be very much empty.

If you want to be safe then you could go to a main dealer, but they charge an enourmous amount of money. Or if your a fully-trained mechanic then you could service it yourself, but for the majority of us, just choose wisely, or put a camera in your car.

Where I grew up it was common knowlege that if you went to large electronics retailers (e.g. BestBuy, Circuit City) to have car stereo equipment installed it was very likely that the tech would be paying you an unscheduled home visit sometime next week to, shall we say, reclaim said equipment.

Put a mouse-trap where the guys spare change was, then the mechanic might learn his lesson and stop stealing other peoples spare change.

If this was in England then the mechanic would’ve been searching for undated 20p coins to sell on Ebay. :)

A few years ago I dropped my peugeot 206 GTi off for its first service, then went around the corner to have a coffee at a cafe. About 20 minutes after I dropped it off, I see it leave the dealers, tyres spinning, bounce off the rev limiter in 1st before disappearing around the corner with tyres squeeling. When I confronted the dealer he at first denied that it had happened, but finally admitted that they had given it to a customer to test drive because they didn’t have a demo Gti.

I love the fact that after the first clip, all the coins are taken from the compartment in the door, but the in the second clip the “technican” still has to have a look!

i once took my car to a certain vw dealership in the A14 versinity and when i went to collect it, it was covered in scratchs and had a emty cake tin left on drivers seat with a nice collection of crumbs around it, and then when i complained, que the big man walking upto me saying it was already there when i droped it off, yeh i sit on cake tins when a drive and like to drop tool boxes on my car every now and again

I brought my car for service and new front tyres to a garage.

When I picked up my care and wanted to change a disc in de cdplayer I noticed one CD was missing. When I got back in the garage the missing cd was playing on the mechanincs stereo system in their lunchroom. when I claimed that the stole my cd they claimed that they needed to clean out my glovebox to get to the fusebox (is located at the driverside….) and it must have fel out and when they found it they didn’t know in which car it should be put back….

My mate is a mechanic for an established manufacturing. He’s not bought a CD in ten years because he “borrows” his clients. Then there was the client who for some reason had a collapsible petrol scooter in his boot. I think everyone in the garage had a go on it. Then there was the dubious picture of someone’s wife/girlfriend in a glove box…..nice. The moral of the story is ALWAYS empty your car before it goes anywhere without you!

I always take a photo of the mileage in my car when I leave it on one of these next-to-the-airport car parks, where boys sometimes move the cars. Once I found out it had done 3.5 miles, surely just moving about the small area to let other cars pass. I always had rather quick cars so it was tempting to take a test drive.

Now I’ve installed a clifford alarm with anti hijack device – without entering PIN code you’re only allowed to drive few hundred yards which is more than enough. I always warn parking or garage guys so they know. If someone tries to race my car a bit, he’ll end up activating tracker device and calling nearest police patrol to the stolen car.

And to be honest I can’t wait for this to happen so I can have a laugh.

hmm.. well a little “testdrive” a chocolate bar and a few quid in change is nothing but pure innocence compared to some bills we’re charged.. especially when it is achingly obvious the work hasn’t been done properly or in most cases simply hasn’t been done at all..Chances of an honest workshop and a good mechanic is are as good as winning the lottery regardless where you go..So if you find one cherish it as if your car depended on it!!!

It is Hampton Toyota in Lafayette, Louisiana. This was the third time he took his truck to the dealership after complaining about things being stolen the previous two times. He installed the video camera then mailed the videos to the owner of the dealership as well as local news outlets.
