GTbyCitroen: OK, it’s real

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 10:13 am on Tuesday June 30, 2009

Even when we talked about the GTbyCitroen hitting London last week, we still remained somewhat sceptical about its actual existence. But now, with the arrival of this video, our scepticism has vanished:

We knew of one that had been driven, but not one that’s actually real in the sense that it was up to the job of tooling around town.

There had been reports of it going round the tracks at the ’Ring and Le Mans 24hr races, but we were there and we didn’t see it.

It definitely drove round the Le Mans town in the supercar parade, but that was still at very slow speed.

So we weren’t sceptical that it actually existed, just that it did any of the things that Citroen said it did.

There are reports of supposed drives of it, but even those videos looked like a CGI car when it was running at speed.

Saying all that, even this video doesn’t prove if it can actually run at speed, so we’ll have to wait for it to go up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the weekend.

Let’s hope this fine weather holds out.

That V8 sound just doesn’t go with this Citroen in my opinion. What it needs is a nice high-rev V12 sound. Because V8 sound reminds of Brick-shaped muscle cars and this is super sleek supercar.

Sounds like a V8 (supercharged?) or maybe even V10.
    Sounds good.
    Looks good.
    My god, Citroen!

At least it isn’t the electric drive from the game….

This car looks quite exciting, even next to a Lambo. If they make a mini-series, it’ll likely be one of the most clownish (in a good way) cars ever to roll off the lines of a major automotive player…

I’m curious to see it go full throttle, but I’m not sure the Goodwood Festival of Speed will be broadcast on any channel I can watch in my country. Will it be covered on BBC 1 and/or 2?

Chances are it’ll benefit from the Citroen/Peugeot gig by getting the 908 race car chassis for the purposes of Goodwood… and don’t count out the 908 diesel engine either. How about 4 of the C4 rally car engines bolted together making an 8 litre v16 inter-cooled quad-turbo. Anyone? oh wait…

Wow! A car which was designed just for Gran Turismo is now a reality. Only difference is that the GTbyCitroen in GT5P had 1 forward gear and 1 reverse gear, so i expect that this real version has more gears.

I have to admit it’s nothing like the mad supercars sketched in the back of a Geography book when we were all younger, in other words, the designer is a genius! It also sounds incredible, like swineflu is trying to escape from the engine bay, then you floor it and it sounds like a nuclear war is occuring inside the engine.

I have to admit, it’s a full on mad supercar, like a Zonda but in a different league of madness. I love it! :)

According to the french video from Quattro, the car has a 600hp V8, 4 point harness, HUD, no electronic stability, tubular chassis, carbon fiber body, 6 speed sequential box, and a boost system that adds an extra 200hp for overtaking. This is pure madness and I want one so bad!!! Leave it to the French to come up with something completely out of this world and beautiful too.

The original real car was powered, as it is in the game, by 4 hydrogen motors making a total of 780bhp and 1,800lb ft. It’s also “geared” (for lack of a better term for this gearless car) to go 303mph, although I suspect physics prevent that speed from ever happening. After all, a Corvette Z06 is geared to 280-odd mph.

Unfortunately the lack of a hydrogen infastructure (or indeed the €1 squillion needed to produce 6 of these insane cars) means it’s powered by a cheaper, boring, 500bhp V8. I wanted that whooshing sound akin to a jet engine or a spaceship like in GT5P…

Still, if I had £1.1m, I’d get one in an instant. Look at it!!

Interesting form of censorship hitting these columns – the previous comments of myself and another poster, pointing out grammatical errors in the original article, have now been removed.
The poor grammar has also been corrected – so do the 2 of us qualify for part of Mr. Hibbard’s salary??

@grimble.. the answer is no. After all, you didn’t write the article, hIBBARD did. Why he didn’t opt to use the ever so efficient spell check, remains a mystery.
ps. keep in mind, these ppl are motor journos..ie.: can barely read, can’t really write and aren’t talented enough drivers to make a living from driving.. so cut them some slack, they do the best they can ..sometimes… :D

The reason it looks like a CGI car when it’s going at speed, is because they’re showing footage of a Playstation 3 game called Gran Turismo.

That’s the reason they made this car.

bushmann, I’m not sure where that harsh generalisition for motor journalists came from – surely they DO make a living from driving, seeing as the job, as far as I know, entails driving a car, poking around the interior and writing about it? I don’t suppose you read the magazine, with it’s primitive paper pages and ink, but I’ve never found holes to poke in their journalism.

Or perhaps I’ve never poked holes because I’m not an irritating Grammar Nazi like you and grimble are coming across as.

@mikeado.. the “generalisation”, be it as shallow as it may appear, came from my humble experience of reading article upon article of mainly badly written and horribly composed opinionated misinformation(k-rap)prod uced by various motor journalists the world over.. If you take a split second to actually think about what I wrote it’ll become clear that spelling in my opinion, though it does reflect on the author,is not really worth getting stuck up about.. You might, of course, not agree.. calling people nazis however is simply
    bad taste at best.
