Back in the gym’

Posted by Jamie Hibbard at 9:24 am on Tuesday June 2, 2009

Ken Block’s first gymkhana video had over 20 million views – which is massive by anyone’s standards. So what would you expect him to do with that kind of audience? Market his new line of DC gear to it of course! Block’s a savvy businessman, so you can count on him to do things differently:

Yes this is an informercial to sell his clothes, but you can forgive him all of the pre-film commercialism for the down right impressive Subaru driving that comes after it, at 1min 10sec.

We especially love the super-slo-mo, but we also wonder how many takes it took to get right.

How much of a mess did he make in practice?

But frankly, when something’s this cool, it doesn’t really matter.

Do you think Block got the idea for that manequin sequence from Clarkson’s Evo X vs Impreza film?

    O.O WOW!!

I like the warning message at the beginning. And the explosion about 5 mins in was a great touch. It’s amazing what rediculous drift angles AWD lets you achieve. Surely this is as much of an advert for Subaru as DCshoeco? Ah hell, that was epic!

I’m not sure which I prefer though. Obviously this is better put together – with its pyrotechnics and slo-mo – but then it would be because these guys know roughly how big an audience they have to please this time. I prefer the car in the first vid – better looking and much better sounding than this new-fangled Impreza – and the Segway bit was better than the paintball bit, but this one has more and better use of props. Hmmm…

^ Cock With Four Rings, please stop posting Audi videos. They’re not interesting, especially compared to Gymkhana and Moto GP antics.

He should try sliding a RWD car around, oh wait then he’d actually have people to compete and lose against.

Ok so he had to do it a few times, but that 1st drift went on for miles!
The fact he can do it once out of 20 takes is awesome.

I’m going to whatch the first one now as I haven’t seen it.

Its an impressive bit of driving for sure but, in my opinion at least its far inferior to the original. The original film seemed like a motorsport video, this seems more like a music video; too many special effects, too much advertising and FAR too much slow motion. Just too, well, American really.

Still, having said that, I’d like to think that if I had the money and resources, I’d spend my days charging round dock yards and getting shot at with paintball guns! (I just wouldn’t design any garish t-shirts to accompany said tomfoolery).

I didn’t believe that the new gymkhana would be better thatn the original, but, it was and i loved it. The slo-mo bits were spectacular, the driving was biblical and the whole video was amazing.

But, the only problem i have with it is that it’s basically, a huge advert for DC, partly Crawford Performance and partly Subaru. But who cares? It’s incredible!

There were a lot of cut-scenes. He is talented but the editing suggests that he needed to do so many runs (highlighted by the tyre marks) to get at least one good shot of each manouver.

I love watching Ken Block. OK, this vid might not have had the same charm as the first one, but it did look stunning and the use of props was very, very good. I don’t know why, but I particularly liked the driving over the tubes bit. And the car doesn’t look quite so poke-your-eyes-out ugly when it’s liveried up like that. Niiiice.

Dave: You think he didn’t practice that run beforehand? And, who cares if they did numerous single takes, it’s still world-class driving your brain will never comprehend.

Carlos: Of course I thought he practiced – the tyre marks show he practiced and I said he was talented – It would be so much more impressive if the whole thing was done in a single take with longer shots or picture in picture shots rather than short clips put tohether – but that’s something your brain will never comprehend.

Nice cameo by Rob Dydrek. He was the fellow with the paintball gun. He’s a professional skateboarder sponsored by DC and has a show on MTV similar to Travis Pastrana’s Nitro Circus.

Pretty impressive stuff. You can see there was a good bit of practice because of all the rubber laid down but the speeds he is doing are incredible especially when he gets close to the water like that! It’s like Jackass with cars hopefully Ken Block will do a weekly TV show!
