What is it with chrome?

Posted by Tom Ford at 6:25 am on Friday October 31, 2008

So we get the Veyron Pur Sang edition. But the whole chrome paint thing makes my cleaning gene bust into overdrive… here’s a few:

A nice shiny Ferrari 599 – ugh…

Mirror finish Audi A8…

A BMW M3 that you can see yer face in…

A reflection on a tasteful Merc SL

How about a dark-chrome GTR? Actually, I quite like this one…

OK but the Pur Sang is a special edition and is carbon fibre finished in chrome by Bugatti and is good unlike the others,(with the exception of the GTR which looks awesome and was done properly) the others where done by owners who should know better. and look awful

I’m putting together a little line-up of weird and wonderful paintjobs. There’s some real weird stuff out there. Seen the photovoltaic paint that can run your air-con without draining the battery? All good stuff…

The bugatti looks ok in chrome, but everything else looks like someone has brought a fabulous car and found bits of ‘shiny things’ in their bin and glued them on with super glue. Carbon Fibre looks so much better. A tuning company called ‘amuse’ took a R34 GT-R (like the one above) Gave it around about 600bhp and the whole body was made out of carbon fibre. (The same car is on Gran Turismo 4)

I loved the look of the bare polished aluminium Jaguar XJ (which I believe was in the TG sutdio once) but overall it makes cars look a bit like overgrown and unfinished dinky toys.. or the sort of mantlepiece ornaments that car workers receive when they meet quota without chopping anyobody’s arms off, or failed auto execs are given shortly before having their pensions cancelled and being sent to live in a dustbin.

What I want to know is – where is the electro reactive paint job that will allow us to do a ‘Cannonball Run’ for real rather than having to have a handy roadside jetwash.. and would the police and DVLA allow it?

the bugatti isn’t chrome paint. in-fact it hasnt got any paint. that’s the idea of it. paint weighs.. .something. so they didnt put any on. or they took it off. or something. but point is, that’s just the car’s bodywork polished up, unlike the others which maybe’re wrapped in tin foil?

Looking forward to that line-up though Tom. It gonna be in the magazine or something? Though not real, possibly the best I’ve seen was the mona lisa on a murcielago on Forza 2.

The ferrari, the bugatti, the mercedes and the GT-R are great looking but the others should go in the carbage area.

re 8: no… i mean as in paint adds weight to a car. So Buggati decided to not paint it to make the car lighter. or to not make it heavier. whatever way that works. If you actually read what I put rather than just guessing, you’d notice that I clearly implied that i have no idea how much the paint that usually goes on a Veyron would weigh. but it would have a mass, and therefore, not aplying it would save weight and increase quickness. And you claim to be the Stig. His Stigness would understand the very basic principle of less weight = more speed.

adrian is right the paint does weigh sumthin coz on a plane the paint can weigh up to 1,500lbs but obviously the paint on a veyron wudnt weigh that much lol maybe ferrari and porsche shud think about that next time they make a stripped out track car.

and the chrome paint is chrome i think it is a special silver nitrate mix that is sprayed on then distilled water is sprayed on it then it goes shiny im not sure tho coz i saw the M3 in max power and the owner paid like $5000 to get the painter trained how to do it.

Mercedes got their main paint as brilliant silver because when they were first racing (whenever it was) their white merc was too heavy. they then stripped the paint, and the weight problem was resolved so HA!

Veyron, GTR and the audi look cool. the rest look like the wrapping that my steak pie is going to be in tonight ;)
