Corvette ZR1 – the most important test.

Posted by Tom Ford at 4:48 pm on Tuesday October 28, 2008

It’s ok – the new supercharged Corvette ZR1 passes the big test we were all concerned about here at Cupholder HQ. Thank God. Corners? We don’t need them.

Just what every american wants. a BIG car with a BIG engine and a lot of smoke. sadly we can’t afford new sets of tyres every time we set of from a junction.

Correct. The Corvette is a similar size to a 911. Common misconception. And a very sorted sports car. Admittedly, it sports a not-inconsequential very large small-block, but it’s a brilliant thing. And they guy on the video is just playing…

American supercars are the back breaking terrible handling loud fun to drive cheap supercars. All except the Ford GT.But i have to say americans are stepping up.The
ZR-1 i hear does 25mpg!And its easy to drive they say it does what you want it to do.But vipers are still the best supercars of america.

I think im right in saying the new ZR1 is, by far, the best corvette ever made. more than 630bhp! 0-60 in 3.4 sec! Top speed is 205mph! The nearest thing to keeping up with it is a Murcielago LP640, a Ferrari 599 or F430 scuderia or even a zonda! but these cost twice as much! the only problem with the corvette is that it is basically a 911 or an F430 on a budget, but the only way to go faster (acceleration) for less is if you buy an ariel atom.

    YEAH!!

That’s why muscle cars (and the Corvette, I’m not sure it’s really ‘muscle’) exist, for cocking around in!

PetrolHead, Nissan GT-R 0-60: 3.3 secs. And the upcoming V-Spec will be faster and cost about as much as a bog standard 997.

I didn’t think I was terribly bothered about this sort of American car… until I met the previous ‘Vette at a showroom earlier this year. Within a few minutes I was considering remortgaging my house, and half an hour later the person I was with very nearly had to use a crowbar to get me away from the thing. And this one knocks seven shades of something or other out of the one I saw. Not sure I believe in love at first sight, but this was definitely lust. It must have been – despite knocking on the doors of middle age, I have never taken a driving test!

Great a Corvette thats faster than a Murcialago. Plus it is even mor capable than most other supercars. I thin that this could all end in pain.

The zr1 ticks all the boxes from superb handling, brakes, gorgeous looks, history to performance & speed its got it all & at a price that makes a lot of european cars look stupid.
Its without doubt one of the best around.
I just wish people even the top gear crew would treat it as it does alot of the euro cars.

Why smoke tyres with you foot on the brake ( watch the front wheels ) what an idiot ! This could well be the greatest US car of all see its time round the Ring !! shame we would have to pay near double the price in the UK.

GT-R VOIDS WARRANTY IF USED WITH LAUNCH CONTROL, NEEDED TO ACHIEVE 3.3 0-60. NOW THAT IS RUBBISH. A CAR THAT CAN NOT EVEN USE ITS OWN FEATURES WITH OUT VOIDING WARRANTY.

The ZR1 is superb but the Z06 is just as good frankly. MPG well into the mid 20s from a 7 litre engine, all carbon and magnesium, 200mph+ performance and a sub 4s 0-60. Believe me for £60k there is nothing on the road like it. Even the left hand drive becomes a virtue when you get used to it. I’ll never go back to my 911 – ever.

As a Vette owner (2005 C6 Convertible Z51) living in Australia with the right hand drive conversion I have to say that it is by far the BEST value for money in the world. I sold the S Type Jaguar and got the Vette, which is now my daily driver. You cannot buy anything close to 423HP and with the handling of the best Supercars like the Vette. I also hear the boys at Topgear put the car down but they forget that the Vette KILLS most other Supercars in almost every way…. all for a fraction of the price. Why buy a Ferrari just for the brand? Europeans are just JELOUS as are most non-Vette owners who drive Toyota’s….Check out my car on the Dyno and make sure your speakers are turned way up…http://s476.photobuc ket.com/albums/r…t=DSCN00 13.flv Almost better than sex!

The massive burnout and impressive 0-60 time is all well and good. But if this is all one is focused on, then they are missing the point entirely. What is truly exceptional and a real modern day first for a U.S. manufacturer is that the ZR1’s chassis, brakes, suspension and resulting super-car performance is second to none – period, regardless of pricing or badges.

Now, when you factor in the pricing it is absolutely incomparable! The cost savings in lieu of a Ferrari or Porsche with similar performance could save you $100K and allow you to purchase a ’09 Cadillac CTSV, BMW 7 series, Mercedes CL63 AMG, Audi R8, etc. for your everyday “commuter.” Buying the Ferrari or Porsche solely for status would be pretty pathetic.

As for the GTR. This is also an exceptional value. Just remember, you’re not driving that car. It’s actually a computer programmer from Japan who is constantly in control, ensuring you don’t do anything too human-like. For instance, burning off the rear rubber just for the grin of it.
